Are you a carer?
A Carer is someone who, without payment, provides help and support to a friend, neighbour or relative who could not manage otherwise without their help.
Anyone can become a Carer. It is estimated that three out of five people in the UK will become a Carer at some point in their life. Carers' come from all walks of life, all cultures and can be of any age. Carers may provide care for someone they live with, or from a distance. The care they provide could be practical or emotional.
Children or young people who undertake caring responsibilities are called 'Young Carers'.
Many Carers do not consider themselves to be a Carer, they are just looking after their mother, son, or best friend, just getting on with it and doing what anyone else would in the same situation.

Health support for carers
Many Carers have a higher risk of ill-health as a result of being a Carer. It is important that your GP knows that you are a Carer, so that they can provide you with practical support and assistance. Your Primary care team can also help you in other ways, such as Community Nursing, Pharmacists and advice on caring in the home.

Carers assessment
You can request a confidential Carers Assessment from the Community Care Access Team.
The purpose of a Carer's assessment is to discuss with social services the help you need with caring, plus help to maintain your own health and balance caring with your life, work and family commitments. Social services use the assessment to decide with you and the person cared for, what help to provide.
The assessment is usually carried out by a social worker but is sometimes done by occupational therapy or nursing staff, or members of a Community Mental Health Team.
You can also request an assessment if you intend to look after someone who is coming out of hospital. You should discuss this with the social workers in the hospital.
