Obesity
Obesity is extremely prevalent and is a major cause of ill-health and premature death. In the UK the prevalence has more than doubled in the last 25 years. Nearly a quarter of adults are now obese and it is estimated that by 2050 60% of the adult UK population could be obese, with some 40% obese by 2025.
The Adult Obesity Care Pathway has been developed in partnership with the five boroughs in the North Central London Sector (Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey and Islington). It was approved by the NHS Haringey Professional Executive Committee (PEC) in January 2008 and was updated in February 2011.
The obesity care pathway is the recommended care pathway for the management of overweight or obese adult patients. In addition, a resource pack has been developed to provide guidance for health professionals when addressing these issues. The pathway and resource pack have been developed in line with the latest evidence based practice published by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) in December 2006 and will be reviewed when necessary based on new national guidance.
