Managing Type 2 Diabetes in Primary Care

The management of type 2 diabetes is a key priority for Haringey. Diabetes prevalence, according to March 2009 QMAS data is 3.9% (national prevalence is 3.6%) and there are 10 263 people in Haringey diagnosed with Diabetes according to General Practice Diabetes Registers (QoF 2008/9). With a large percentage of patients in the African, African Caribbean and Middle Eastern communities, where people are more at risk of developing diabetes and with high levels of deprivation, Haringey’s prevalence could be even higher.

The NHS Haringey Diabetes guidelines and pathways have been updated to reflect the new NICE Clinical Guidance 66: The management of Type 2 Diabetes 2008 and Guideline 87 - Newer Agents 2009.  The pathways also reflect current local practice and service provision.  Additional pathways have also been developed that were not previously available.

This was undertaken by the NICE Guidance Subgroup which was co-chaired by Shantell Naidu, Diabetes Specialist Nurse and Judith Whitehead, Care Pathway Facilitator.  Membership of the subgroup included clinicians from both primary and secondary care. The pathways and guidelines have been approved by the Clinical Effectiveness Group and Prescribing Advisors.
