Life Savers - Cancer Awareness

Saving lives by talking about the signs of bowel, breast and lung cancer

Could you be a volunteer?

Why focus on cancer?

About 1 in 3 people will develop cancer at some point in their lives. Of this, bowel, breast and lung cancer are three of the most common cancers here in the UK.

The chances of being cured of cancer are much better if it is found early.

What is this project about?

Haringey Life Savers aim to promote better awareness of the signs of bowel, breast and lung cancer so that people visit their doctor sooner and get earlier diagnosis and treatment. The project is part of a national pilot called the Healthy Communities Collaborative (HCC). Haringey is one of 19 HCC’s for Cancer Awareness across England.

The Haringey Life Saver programme involves two community teams doing awareness-raising activities about the signs of bowel, breast and lung cancer in the neighbourhoods of Hornsey, Northumberland Park, White Hart Lane.

Local general practices are also involved so that we can see if our community activity does result in people going to see their doctor and getting treatment earlier.

How can I help?

Volunteer to raise awareness

Your contribution as a Haringey Life Saver volunteer will help raise people’s awareness of bowel, breast and lung cancer by:

  1. Talking to friends, family and local groups
  2. Taking part in awareness raising events
  3. Developing new leaflets and displays
  4. Be part of changing local services for the better

What’s in it for me?

  1. Great way to meet new people and friends
  2. Free training - learn more about health
  3. Chance to give something back
  4. Gain experience which could help with job hunting
